What should you know about yogurt?

youghurt

All of us know that yogurt is very healthy, especially in terms of weight loss and protection against heart disease. On the other side, yogurt is rich in many nutrients; the most significant ones include the following:

  • Protein: yogurt is a good source of protein, noting that protein content of Greek yogurt is about twice of the protein content of traditional yogurt.
  • Calcium; which is needed mainly for bones health and strength.
  • Probiotics which is known also as "beneficial bacteria": they promote the functional capacity of the immune system and improve functions of food digestion and absorption.

While yogurt has many health benefits, it should be noted that flavored or sweetened yogurts aren't good choice. Instead, you can add healthy natural additives to your yogurt (such as; fruit smoothie, frozen fruit, cinnamon or vanilla) so as to improve its flavor.
There are many yogurt products in the markets; the most common ones include the following:

  1. Greek yogurt: it's the best one as it's very rich in protein and highly effective in weight loss.
  2. Traditional yogurt: it's the most common yogurt products, but it should be noted that its protein content is relatively less than the Greek yogurt.
  3. Whole-milk yogurt: it's rich in saturated fats, so it seems to be good choice for babies and children who need extra fat content to promote their growth and development.
  4. Non-dairy yogurt: it seems to be good options for vegetarian people or who has milk sensitivity as it made of almond, soy or coconut milk. It's rich in protein, with relatively high levels of sugar and saturated fat.
  5. Flavored yogurt: most dietitians don't recommend flavored yogurts as they are rich in sugar. Anyway, if you insist on flavored yogurt, try to choose one with content less than 120 calories and 13 grams of sugar.
