Endocarditis

June 23, 2026
Topic

Irritation and swelling of the inner lining of the heart's chambers and valves. Usually caused by infection.

Endocarditis usually happens when germs such as bacteria or fungi get in the bloodstream and stick to damaged areas of the heart. People with damaged heart valves, artificial heart valves or other heart conditions are most at risk. Quick treatment is needed to prevent long-lasting heart valve damage.

Symptoms include chest pain when breathing, shortness of breath, sore muscles and joints, fever, and chills. Some people have night sweats. Swelling in the feet, legs or belly also might happen.

Treatment depends on the cause. Most people are successfully treated with antibiotics. If a fungus caused it, antifungal medicine is given. Some people need surgery to fix or replace damaged heart valves. Surgery also may be done to remove any remaining signs of infection.
