8 tips to prevent weight gain when fasting in Ramadan

Although fasting is believed to help with weight loss, many people end up gaining weight in Ramadan due to their unhealthy eating choices.

Here are a few tips to help prevent weight gain while fasting during Ramadan:

  • Replace full-fat dairy products with low-fat and fat-free dairy products.
  • Avoid fatty and deep-fried foods. Instead, choose baked, grilled, or boiled alternatives.
  • Limit the intake of sugary foods. Instead, consume fruits and fresh juices rich in fibers.
  • Avoid sleeping immediately after the Suhoor and Iftar meals as it slows down the basal metabolic rate, resulting in fat deposition and weight gain.
  • Break your fast with dates, followed by a healthy Iftar meal consisting of soups, salads, and other vitamins, minerals, and fluids to replenish the body.
  • Drink 2 – 3 liters of water between Iftar and Suhoor. Water increases the basal metabolic rate and prevents fat deposition associated with weight gain.
  • Indulge in a 30-minute walk at least 2 hours after Iftar to facilitate the peristaltic movements of the intestine, promote digestion, and prevent weight gain.
  • Limit the consumption of salty and processed foods as these have a high salt content which results in water retention, slows down the metabolism, and prevents the digestion of fats.
