Heart disorders during pregnancy

Heart disorders during pregnancy

Pregnancy puts the woman's body under pressure, which affects the health of her heart, as pregnancy affects the blood circulation of the pregnant woman and increases the blood volume by 30% to 50% to help grow the fetus, thus increasing the heart rate and with it the pumping of blood.

Giving birth itself also puts additional pressure and load on the heart, as during labor, especially when the woman pushes the baby, there is a change in blood pressure and flow. And the woman may need several weeks after giving birth until the pressure level on the heart returns to normal levels or as it was before pregnancy.

What are the potential risks?

1- Heart valves issues:

As mentioned earlier, the blood pressure and flow increase during pregnancy, which requires a healthy heart that works properly. And if the pregnant woman suffers from malformation of the heart or valves (scarring or an artificial heart valve) it increases the risk of suffering from health complications.

2- Heart rhythm issues:

You don't have to worry about arrhythmia as minor heart rhythm abnormalities are relatively common during pregnancy and can be treated with appropriate medications.

3- Congenital heart defect:

If the mother is born with a congenital heart defect, there is a risk of complications during pregnancy and may be exposed to premature birth. In addition, she may give birth to a child who also suffers from a congenital heart defect.

4- Congestive heart failure:

Increased blood volume can exacerbate congestive heart failure.

Serious symptoms that a pregnant woman may suffer from:

  1. A pregnant woman may suffer from chest pain.
  2. A pregnant woman may feel accelerated or irregular heartbeat or heart palpitation.
  3. A pregnant woman may have difficulty breathing.
  4. The pregnant woman may also suffer from bloody cough or Nocturnal Cough.
  5. She may also suffer from shortness of breath or difficulty breathing when exerting effort or during rest.

If the woman feels any of these symptoms, she should consult her doctor immediately.

How to avoid complications?

  1. Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks, using drugs, or smoking.
  2. Visit the doctor regularly throughout pregnancy.
  3. Take the medications prescribed by the doctor.
  4. Rest and avoid hard work.
  5. Avoid anxiety and stress.
